Locked out right now? Do this first
- If anyone is in danger, call 911 first. A child or pet alone inside, a stove left on, or a medical emergency is a job for first responders, not a locksmith.
- Check your other doors — back door, garage entry, a keypad. Don't climb through windows or force a door or slider; a split frame or bent track costs more than the lockout.
- Think about who has a spare — a roommate, family member, neighbor, landlord or property manager. Many condo front desks and association offices keep unit keys on file, so ask them first.
- Call or text LockFox at (754) 328-1958. Tell us the address, gate or building instructions, the type of lock (deadbolt, knob, lever, keypad or smart lock) and whether your ID is with you. A photo of the lock helps.
- Wait somewhere safe and well lit — your car, a neighbor's porch or the building lobby rather than a dark street.
What happens on an emergency lockout call
You call or text
We ask about the property, the door and the lock, and give you a price and our timing before anyone drives out.
We verify residency
Before we open anything, we check that you live or work there. Details are in the next section.
Damage-free entry first
Most standard residential and commercial locks can be opened with non-destructive techniques such as picking or specialized bypass tools, leaving the lock and door as they were.
Rekey or repair if needed
If your keys were lost or stolen, we can rekey the lock while we're there so the missing key stops working.
When a lock can't be opened without damage
Not every lock opens cleanly. High-security cylinders are built to resist picking, and a broken, jammed or failed electronic lock may not respond to non-destructive methods. Then the practical option can be drilling the cylinder and replacing the lock. We explain why and what it will cost before we drill, and you decide.
Proof of residency: what we'll ask to see
We verify every home and business lockout before entry. Opening a door for someone who doesn't belong there is how homes get burglarized, so this protects you too. Any of these usually works:
- A driver's license or state ID showing the service address
- Photo ID plus a lease, rental agreement or recent utility bill with your name and the address (a copy on your phone is fine)
- Photo ID plus confirmation from your landlord, property manager or condo front desk
- For a business: photo ID plus proof you're authorized, such as your name on the lease or business records, or confirmation from the owner or property manager
ID locked inside? Tell us when you call. We'll work out another way to confirm residency — usually a landlord, property manager or association office vouching for you, or documents you can pull up on your phone. If we can't reasonably confirm it, we won't open the door.
Condos, HOAs and gated communities
A lot of South Florida lives behind a gate or a front desk. Many communities — from guard-gated country club neighborhoods in Boca Raton and Palm Beach Gardens to large 55+ communities like Kings Point in Delray Beach and the Century Villages in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach and Pembroke Pines — control who comes in. A few things make these calls go faster:
Guard gates
Tell us the community name, and add LockFox to your guest list or visitor app or let the gatehouse know a locksmith is coming.
Condo & apartment buildings
We open your unit door. Lobby doors, garage gates, elevators and key fobs belong to the association or management, so call them about building access. Ask the front desk whether they hold a key to your unit.
Renters & association rules
If a lock has to be replaced, check your lease — many require the landlord's consent and a copy of the new key. Some associations also set rules for exterior hardware style or finish. Let us know so we can plan the right parts.
Office, store and business lockouts
We handle lockouts at offices, storefronts, suites and warehouses across both counties. Commercial doors often use different hardware than homes, such as narrow-stile aluminum storefront doors, mortise locks, panic bars and electronic access control, so describe the door when you call.
For recurring problems, see our commercial locksmith services, access control, panic bars and exit devices and master key systems.
Other kinds of lockouts
- Car lockout — keys locked in the car or trunk
- Lost car keys — no working key at all
- Key broken in the ignition
- Locked out of a safe — lost combination or key
What affects the price of a lockout
We quote each call once we know the details rather than listing one number that rarely matches the bill. The main factors:
- The type and security level of the lock (standard, high-security, keypad or smart lock)
- Whether damage-free entry works or the lock has to be drilled and replaced
- How many locks are engaged (for example, a knob and a deadbolt both locked)
- Anything added on site, such as rekeying, new hardware or extra keys
- Where the property is within Palm Beach and Broward County
After you're back inside
Keys lost or stolen? Rekey the lock so the missing key no longer works. It's usually quicker and cheaper than replacing hardware. See rekeying and lock installation.
Tired of lockouts? A keypad or smart deadbolt means there's no key to forget. We install them as part of our residential locksmith services.
Rethink the hidden key. Under the mat or in a planter is the first place a burglar checks. A trusted neighbor or a lockbox is a better backup.

Emergency lockout FAQs
Can you open my door without damaging it?
In most cases, yes. Standard residential and commercial locks can usually be opened with non-destructive techniques. High-security, broken or jammed locks sometimes can't, and the lock may need to be drilled and replaced. We explain that before any drilling and you decide.
What ID do I need to show?
A driver's license or state ID with the service address, or photo ID plus a lease, utility bill or confirmation from your landlord or property manager. Businesses need proof you're authorized. We verify before we open the door.
What if my ID is locked inside?
Tell us when you call. We'll look for another way to confirm residency, such as your landlord, property manager or association office vouching for you, or documents on your phone. If we can't reasonably confirm it, we won't open the door.
Do you handle lockouts in gated communities and condo buildings?
Yes. Give us the community name and add LockFox to your guest list or tell the gatehouse we're coming. In condo buildings we open your unit door; lobby, garage and elevator access are controlled by the association.
Are you really available 24 hours a day?
Yes. LockFox Locksmith is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across Palm Beach and Broward County. Call or text (754) 328-1958 and we'll tell you our timing for your location.
How much does an emergency lockout cost?
It depends on the lock type and security level, whether damage-free entry works, how many locks are engaged and anything added on site, like rekeying. Call or text with the details for a quote.
My keypad or smart lock died. Can you get me in?
Usually. Many keypad and smart locks have a backup key cylinder or an emergency power option, and in many cases we can open them without damage. Tell us the brand and model when you call.
