Match your problem to the right fix

Most drivers call with a symptom, not a service name. Here’s how the common ones usually sort out:

  • “I lost my only key.” This is an all-keys-lost job: a new key is cut to your vehicle’s code and programmed to the car. Don’t pay for a tow until you’ve called — see car key replacement.
  • “I have one key and want a spare.” Adding a key while you still have a working one is usually simpler and costs less than replacing a lost one.
  • “The remote buttons stopped working.” Try a fresh battery first. If that doesn’t fix it, the fob may need to be re-synced or replaced — see key fob programming.
  • “My push-to-start car says key not detected.” Often a weak fob battery or a damaged fob — check the backup start method in your owner’s manual.
  • “My keys are locked inside.” A standard car lockout. If a child or pet is inside in the heat, call 911 first.
  • “The key won’t turn” or “the key is stuck.” Check the steering-wheel lock and that the shifter is fully in Park, then see ignition repair.
  • “My key snapped off in the lock.” Leave the broken piece where it is and keep the other half — we extract it and make a new key.

Car keys we work with

The key type drives most of the work, and most of the cost:

  • Standard metal keys — older vehicles with no chip. Cut and done.
  • Transponder (chip) keys — a small chip in the key head talks to the car’s immobilizer. A copied blade may turn the ignition, but the engine won’t start (or will shut off within seconds) unless the chip is programmed to that car.
  • Remote head keys and flip keys — the key blade, chip and lock/unlock buttons in one housing.
  • Laser-cut (high-security) keys — a groove milled along the side of a thick blade instead of teeth on the edge. They need a different cutting machine than a hardware-store key.
  • Smart / proximity keys — used with push-to-start ignitions. The car senses the key nearby. Most hide an emergency blade inside for the door lock.

Not sure what you have? The Car Key Finder lists key information by make, model and year, or just send us a photo of your key by text.

Find your make

Key types and programming steps vary by manufacturer and model year. Choose your make for model- and year-specific information, or call with your VIN and we’ll confirm what we can do before we dispatch.

Some newer luxury and European models use keys that can only be ordered or programmed through the dealer. If that’s the case for your vehicle, we’ll tell you on the phone rather than send someone out.

How mobile car locksmith service works

No tow truck, no waiting room. We come to where the car is — your driveway, your office lot, a beach parking lot or a parking garage.

1

Call or text

Year, make, model, what happened and where the car is. The VIN helps.

2

Get a quote

We confirm the key type and whether we can handle it on-site, then give you a price before dispatch.

3

We verify ownership

At the vehicle we check your photo ID against the registration or title. No proof, no key — that protects you too.

4

Cut, program, test

The key is cut and programmed, then tested: doors, remote buttons and engine start.

What to have ready

  • A valid photo ID
  • Vehicle registration or title in your name (tell us up front if the car is leased, financed, a company vehicle or registered to a family member)
  • The VIN — visible through the windshield on the driver’s side of the dashboard, on the driver’s door-jamb sticker, and on your registration and insurance card
  • Any keys you still have, including broken pieces
  • Exact location and access notes: gate code, garage level, or the nearest cross street

What affects the price

  • Key type: standard, transponder, remote head, laser-cut or smart key
  • Vehicle year, make and model
  • Spare key vs. all keys lost
  • OEM (factory) vs. quality aftermarket key or fob
  • Time of day and where the vehicle is

The same “car key” can mean very different work, so call with your vehicle details for an actual quote.

Automotive locksmith FAQ

Can a locksmith make a car key without the original?

In many cases, yes. A new key can be cut from the vehicle’s key code or by decoding the lock, then programmed to the car. You’ll need a photo ID and proof of ownership. A small number of newer models require a dealer-only key — we’ll tell you on the phone if yours is one of them.

Do I have to bring the car to you?

No. LockFox is a mobile locksmith. We come to wherever the car is in Palm Beach or Broward County, so in most situations you don’t need a tow.

Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealer for car keys?

It depends on the vehicle and the key. A mobile locksmith can often save you the tow and the wait for a service appointment, and may offer aftermarket as well as factory keys. Call with your year, make and model and we’ll give you a quote you can compare.

What information do you need when I call?

Year, make and model, what happened (lost keys, lockout, fob not working, key won’t turn), where the car is, and the VIN if you can get to it. A photo of your key by text also helps.

Do you work on every make and model?

We work on most common makes, including Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia and Jeep. Capability depends on the exact model year and key system, so we confirm by phone before dispatch.

Are you available at night and on weekends?

Yes. LockFox runs 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. Call or text (754) 328-1958.
